Former US ambassador to the UN and 2024 Republican Presidential hopeful Nikki Haley speaks at the Republican Party of Iowa's 2023 Lincoln Dinner at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 28, 2023. Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley appeared to add a caveat to her proposal that all social media users should be verified by name, suggesting Wednesday that Americans should still be allowed to post anonymously online. Haley, one of the top contenders behind former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primary race, reiterated on CNBC's "Squawk Box" that "we need our social media companies to verify everybody." She had laid out her stance a day earlier in a Fox News interview in which she said users' names should be visible on social media. "They need to verify every single person on their outlet," Haley said, "and I want it by name."

REUTERS/Scott Morgan/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Right-wing U.S. radio host Larry Elder said on Thursday he was suspending his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and endorsing former President Donald Trump. Elder, who joined the race in April, failed to gain enough support to qualify for the Republican Party's candidate debates. "As I look at the path forward, and after careful consideration and consultation with my campaign team, I have made the difficult decision to suspend my campaign," Elder said in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Elder urged his supporters to unite behind Trump, the Republican front-runner, to beat Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 2024 election.

Republican presidential candidate Will Hurd speaks at the Republican Party of Iowa's Lincoln Day Dinner in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S., July 28, 2023. REUTERS/Scott Morgan/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 9 (Reuters) - Former Texas congressman Will Hurd announced on Monday that he is dropping out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination and is endorsing former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to be the party's White House standard bearer. "It is important to recognize the realities of the political landscape and the need to consolidate our party around one person to defeat both Donald Trump and President Biden," Hurd added. Hurd, a former CIA officer, reiterated his argument that Trump is so divisive that he will likely lose a general election next year if he becomes the Republican nominee. "If the Republican party nominates Donald Trump or the various personalities jockeying to imitate his divisive, crass behavior, we will lose," Hurd said.

CNN —Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has amended its lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his hand-picked oversight board, dropping all of its claims except one. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, now focuses solely on the claim that DeSantis and his allies allegedly weaponized their political power to retaliate against the company for exercising its First Amendment right to free speech. The amended lawsuit claims that DeSantis has illegally punished the company since it spoke out. In May, the oversight board voted to file its own lawsuit against Disney to maintain its control of the district. The amended lawsuit comes less than one month after DeSantis encouraged Disney to drop its lawsuit in an interview with CNBC.

REUTERS/Scott Morgan/File PhotoAug 7 (Reuters) - Donald Trump plans to attend the upcoming Iowa State Fair but will skip events with other Republican presidential candidates, an aide to the former president said on Monday, a move likely designed to steal the limelight from his White House rivals. Most of his rivals have agreed to be interviewed individually at the state fair by Iowa's Republican Governor Kim Reynolds between Aug. 11 and Aug. 18, but Trump turned down her invitation. In 2015, early in his ultimately successful bid for the White House, and when most pundits were dismissing his campaign, Trump flew into the Iowa State Fair in a helicopter. "Just like he had a great event in 2015, he's going to have a great event at the Iowa State Fair in 2023," the aide told Reuters.

But Mike Pence, Trump's former vice president, a potential witness in the case and a Republican presidential candidate, called the charges a reminder that "anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States." DeSantis, in a written statement, conceded that he had not read the indictment but suggested that a jury in the nation's capital could not be fair to Trump. Entrepreneur and fellow candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who has gained ground in recent polls but remains well behind Trump and DeSantis, called the indictment "un-American" and said that if elected he would pardon Trump. Trump's most loyal supporters comprise about a third of the Republican electorate, giving other candidates reason to be cautious about criticizing him.

Former U.S. Vice President and Republican presidential candidate Mike Pence speaks at the Republican Party of Iowa's Lincoln Day Dinner in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S., July 28, 2023. Trump, working with six co-conspirators, pushed Pence to refuse to certify the results based on his accusations of voter fraud on multiple occasions, the indictment alleges. But the Vice President who had stood at Trump's side for four stormy years refused. In special counsel Jack Smith's 45-page indictment of Trump, Pence is a frequent participant in the narrative, which includes detailed recollections of private calls and conversations. The indictment describes Trump pressuring Pence to overturn or otherswise tamper with 2020 election results on a number of occasions in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6, including on Christmas Day 2020.

While he faces classic signs of a campaign in free fall, including staffer layoffs and donor concern, DeSantis’ problems are not all self-inflicted. Keith Davis, who has served as Sheriff of Wayne County since 1997, is a Trump voter who is now backing DeSantis. Scott Olson/Getty ImagesIn his first post-reset swing through Iowa, DeSantis had mixed results. While he was in Iowa, DeSantis also repeatedly paid tribute to Reynolds after Trump alienated some caucus-goers by badmouthing the state’s popular Republican governor. But what DeSantis is trying to do, by running a classic Iowa campaign, is a ultimately a conventional move.

Ron DeSantis for defending Florida's new public school standards that teach that some Black people benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills. "But this is one more part of a fact pattern of Ron DeSantis being mean and hateful." A few of DeSantis' Republican opponents, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and former New Jersey Gov. Doug Burgum, another 2024 GOP contender, told NBC News "it's an absurd idea" to think that slavery benefited Black people. Asked about the incident on Sunday, Hurd said: "I knew there were going to be people that didn't like it."

Former US president and 2024 Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump arrives to speak at the Republican Party of Iowa's 2023 Lincoln Dinner at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 28, 2023. Trump had been seeking punitive damages of $475 million in the federal lawsuit filed last October in South Florida, claiming the references hurt his reputation and political career. Trump is a candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination in what is his third run for the presidency as a major-party candidate. "CNN's use of the phrase 'the Big Lie' in connection with Trump's election challenges does not give rise to a plausible inference that Trump advocates the persecution and genocide of Jews or any other group of people," the judge wrote in his decision. Email messages seeking comment were sent to Trump's attorneys in South Florida and Washington.
